The extra letters in wordplay gave “clues’ first letters”; the initials of the clues in grid order spelt out “only different kinds of good weather; crag in centre”. The first part is from a quote by John RUSKIN, “Sunshine is delicious, rain is refreshing, wind braces us up, snow is exhilarating; there is really no such thing as bad weather, only different kinds of good weather”. The letters in starred cells formed FRIAR’S CRAG (spellings with the apostrophe before or after the S, or with none, were all accepted). There is a memorial to Ruskin on Friar’s Crag, bearing the words “The first thing which I remember as an event in life was being taken by my nurse to the brow of Friar’s Crag on Derwentwater”. The lines drawn in the grid formed an outline of the view over Derwentwater from Friar’s Crag, in which Castle Crag can be seen in the centre. CASTLE was highlighted in a different part of the grid.
