The middle letters of extra words in clues spelt “Louis Sullivan”, an American architect who wrote, in an essay titled The Tall Office Building Artistically Considered, published in the March 1896 issue of Lippincott’s Magazine,
“Whether it be the sweeping eagle in his flight, or the open apple-blossom, the toiling work-horse, the blithe swan, the branching oak, the winding stream at its base, the drifting clouds, over all the coursing sun, form ever follows function, and this is the law. Where function does not change, form does not change. The granite rocks, the ever-brooding hills, remain for ages; the lightning lives, comes into shape, and dies, in a twinkling.”
The extra letters in wordplay spelt Sullivan’s maxim “form follows function”. The four unclued entries consisted of a trigonometric function (or two in the case of 18dn) followed by a synonym of “form”: 1ac TAN-CLASS, 37ac SEC-ORDER, 5dn SIN-BENCH, 18dn COS/COT-SHAPE. The puzzle’s title alluded to the fact that the unclued entries were not words (in The Chambers Dictionary), and that FORM doesn’t follow FUNCTION alphabetically.
