The puzzle marked 200 years since the birth of Johann Strauss II on 25 October 1825. The extra letters in wordplay spelt out “Waltz King; hedonism; daily press; river”, hinting respectively at Strauss and the three waltzes of his referred to in rings: 3 Wein, Weib und Gesang entered literally as WINE WOMAN AND SONG (not Women as it’s usually given in English); 5 Morgenblätter (Morning Papers) for TIMES GUARDIAN SUN; and 7 An der schönen blauen Donau (The Blue Danube) for DIE DONAU shaded blue.
