Puzzle explanation
The grid represented a game in progress on a Monopoly board, between players using the HAT and CAR tokens (each entered in a single cell on the perimeter). The letter changes based on extra words in clues produced MONOPOLY along the SE-NW diagonal. The extra (non-word) letter strings in clues were jumbled colours for each set of properties in the corresponding row or column of the board. The grid’s corner 2×2 squares denoted Go, In Jail/Just Visiting, Free Parking and Go to Jail. The corrections to clue misprints spelt out “the car then rolls nine”, which would take the player to the cell corresponding to the Electric Company (hence ELEC CO was highlighted). The rent incurred there would be 0, 4 or 10 times the roll on the dice, depending on whether 0, 1 or both of the utilities were owned; since there was no cell numbered 0 or 90, cell 36 was highlighted.
