Lavish Border by Hawk

Puzzle explanation

For the “titular” clue “Lavish border”, the inserted letters produced the entry FRIEZE, referring to the band across the top of the grid. In the seven other across A entries, the sequences of four inserted lower-case letters exemplified the seven possible combinations of symmetries in a mathematical “frieze group”. The transformations that leave each string unchanged (in addition to translation, ie repetition in the horizontal direction) are:

The corrections to misprints in Set B clues spelt out “rotates, yes; reflects, no”, indicating the dpdp string. The unchecked letters in the grid’s perimeter were a jumble of GREEK KEY so a Greek key pattern (also known as a fret or meander) with rotational but not mirror symmetry was to be drawn in the grid’s frieze. Any continuous line following a path with the required symmetry was accepted, as well as a line with short breaks or a single element of the repeating pattern. Entries were not marked wrong for having any lower-case letters other than those in the seven symmetry strings.
