The corrections to clue misprints spelt “A Trevelyan, J Bond”, the combatants in a climactic fight scene in the 1995 film Goldeneye. The film was set in Cuba but the scene was filmed at the Arecibo Telescope in Puerto Rico. This was the location from which the Arecibo message was beamed into space on 16 November 1974 — the puzzle was published on its 50th anniversary. The message consisted of a 23×73 binary image containing basic information about humanity, DNA, planet Earth and the telescope itself. The first letters of the extra words in clues spelt out “fifty light years away; stickman, DNA”. Highlighting every occurrence of the letters STICKMAND in the grid produced an exact replica of a 13×13 portion of the message, revealing its depiction of a stickman and the lower part of its representation of DNA, plus three pixels forming part of the adjacent information. The puzzle’s title alluded to the final dialogue between Trevelyan and Bond — “For England, James?”, “No. For me.” — and the wider nature of humanity’s message to the stars.
