The puzzle commemorated the folk music collector Cecil Sharp, being published the day before the 100th anniversary of his death on 23 June 1924. He collected his first folk tunes from William KIMBER (highlighted in the grid) in 1899 and went on to publish the associated dances in The Morris Book (also highlighted), the first part of which appeared with Herbert MacIlwaine as co-author in 1907. The extra letters in wordplay of down clues spelt “Cecil J Sharp and HC MacIlwaine”. The last letters of extra words in across clues spelt Country Gardens and Bean Setting, the first two dances described in the book. The puzzle’s title alluded to Sharp’s practice of signing himself C♯.
