The surnames hidden in the grid were of film-makers Georges FRANJU and Jean-Luc GODARD, the composer Edvard GRIEG, John Eric BARTHOLOMEW (the birth name of Eric Morecambe) and “Andrew PREVIEW”. In a famous Morecambe & Wise sketch, Eric Morecambe made a hash of playing a Grieg piano concerto and when arguing with the conductor André Previn, whom he called Andrew Preview, said “I’m playing all the right notes but not necessarily in the right order”. This was represented by highlighting row 9 of the grid, which was a jumble of THE RIGHT NOTES. Franju is quoted in the Oxford Dictionary of Quotations as saying “Movies should have a beginning, a middle and an end”, to which Godard added “Certainly, but not necessarily in that order”. Accordingly, MOESVI was highlighted in column 9, being “movies” with the middle and end switched.
