The message given by sorting the clues in order of their answers and taking the clues’ last letters was “the clues were already in normal grid order”. The puzzle was thus an April Fool’s Day joke, as the answers could have been entered normally without the trouble of logically deducing their locations. All the answers up to five letters long were words meaning “trick” or “deception”.
