The thematic unclued across entries represented a salmon ladder, a series of steps to help salmon find their way upstream around obstacles. They were clued in pairs from the bottom of the “ladder” upwards, from SALMON to LADDER with five types of salmon in between. The unclued down entry was OUANANICHE, another type of salmon. The title referred to a salmon run, the migration of salmon up a river from the sea, in order to spawn.
