Great Western by Buff

Puzzle explanation

Three of the unclued entries, KNAVES, HEARTS and SPADES, referred to the “one-eyed jacks” in a standard deck of cards, ie the ones conventionally depicted in profile. Others were Horatio NELSON and POPEYE, examples of sailors (jacks) with one eye. The remaining unclued entry was MARLON BRANDO, who directed the 1961 western One Eyed Jacks, co-starring Karl Malden, whose name was spelt out by extra letters in wordplay.
