The first letters of the extra words in clues spelt out “Observe BP’s advice when breaking camp”. BP was a nickname of Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of the Scout Movement. In his book Paddle Your Own Canoe, he wrote “Every Scout knows the order about camping, that when you break up your camp there are two things which you should leave behind you: The first is — nothing. The second — your thanks.” There are other phrasings of the rule but the meaning is always that nothing should “remain” apart from one’s thanks. Accordingly, everything other than YOUR THANKS was erased in the completed grid (shown here for information). Baden-Powell’s nickname was echoed in his motto “Be Prepared” and in the title of this puzzle.
