Puzzle explanation

The misprints in half of the clues spelt out “there are no strings on me”, a line from a song sung by Pinocchio in the 1940 Disney film. After PINOCCHIO was formed in the grid by changing a letter, CORD and TIE (strings) above it were removed, making the phrase true, and consequently making Pinocchio’s NOSE shrink to NEB.
