Puzzle explanation
Each clue set was related to paired flavours of quark. Set 1 answer pairs were entered across, one in the top half of the grid and the other in the bottom half; Set 2 answers were entered with one reading up, the other down; Set 3 answers were anagrammed into real words (for strange and charm), and the clues’ misprint corrections formed “flavour”. Physicists Murray Gell-Mann and George Zweig independently proposed the existence of quarks.
