White Becomes Black by Augeas

Puzzle explanation

The extra words in clues were types of shoe. The baseball player Joseph Jefferson Jackson, nicknamed “Shoeless Joe”, was punished for throwing the World Series in October 1919, when the Chicago White Sox lost to the Cincinnati Reds, after which the team was called the Black Sox. Commissioner Kenesaw Mountain Landis refused to exonerate Jackson. The initials of the clues with extra words spelt out “Say it ain’t so, Joe”, a headline appearing in the Chicago Daily News after Jackson’s initial conviction.
