Puzzle explanation
Each clash consisted of the title of a complete work by Jean Sibelius. Corrections to the clue misprints gave “opus numbers”, so the clashes were replaced by the opus numbers of the indicated works. Three of the works don’t have opus numbers as such (being unpublished in Sibelius’ lifetime), so for them the JS numbering of Fabian Dahlström was used. The titles, in grid order, were:
- Finlandia op. 26
- Tapiola op. 112
- Everyman op. 83 (aka Jokamies or Jedermann)
- Ödlan op. 8 (The Lizard)
- The Bard op. 64
- En Saga op. 9
- Swanwhite JS 189 (Svanevit), a full theatre score for Strindberg’s play; the Swanwhite Suite op. 54 is a selection of only about half of the pieces from it, not a whole work as specified in the preamble.
- Kuolema JS 113 (Death), another full theatre score; op. 44 and op. 62 are only partial selections.
- Snöfrid op. 29
- Karelia JS 115 (Scenic Music for a Festival and Lottery in Aid of Education in the Province of Viipuri) consisting of nine movements, from which the Karelia Overture was published as op. 10 and the Karelia Suite op. 11 contained three movements.
- Spring Song op. 16 (Vårsång); Lenzgesang (Spring song) is one of the Six Songs op. 50, so it doesn’t count as a whole work.
