The second letters of the across clues’ extra words spelt out “unjumble all down entries”. Those from down clues gave “rough beast, why no heart?”, leading cryptically to W. B. Yeats [(BEAST + W(h)Y) *], with the phrase “rough beast” taken from his poem The Second Coming. Its beginning and ending are:
Turning and turning in the widening gyre The falcon cannot hear the falconer; Things fall apart; the centre cannot hold; Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world, ... And what rough beast, its hour come round at last, Slouches towards Bethlehem to be born?
Restoring the jumbled down entries to their correct form, and rearranging the unclued MERE ANARCHY to ARCANE RHYME, allowed ambiguities from the original jumbled across entries to be resolved so that new across words were created. The isolated middle section of the grid initially contained CENTRE. Changing the C to G allowed the poem’s first line to be traced in an outward spiral from the T in cell IV. Finally, changing the R to L produced GENTLE (a falcon).
