Puzzle explanation
Fourteen answers were too long for their grid entries and had to have a jumbled (mixed) emotion removed before entry. The six unclued entries were formed by jumbling pairs of the removed emotions. The two emotions left over were WOE and HOPE, jumbled together to give the final answer WHOOPEE.
This puzzle was a tie-in with the 2018 MIT Mystery Hunt in Boston, Massachusetts. Teams entering the Hunt had to solve a large number of puzzles, including this crossword, over the course of a weekend, in a race to find a hidden object.
