The unclued grid entries were PONTE VECCHIO, FIRENZE and H W LONGFELLOW. Corrections to the clue misprints spelt out TADDEO GADDI, a medieval Florentine painter and architect to whom the design of the bridge was atrributed. Longfellow wrote a sonnet about the bridge, crediting Gaddi, both in Italian and in English, beginning:
