Puzzle explanation

Every part of an answer that was a homophone of the name of a letter of the alphabet was replaced in the grid entry by the letter. The theme was applied consistently, according to pronunciations in Chambers.

For example, the pronunciation for PENNY-FARTHING, while not given explicitly in Chambers, may be deduced from PENNY = /pen'i/ and FARTHING = /fär'dhing/; the only letters “named” therein are N and R, so the entry must be P(N)YF(R)THING. Also, the pronunciation for PRESENTIMENT is /pri-zen'ti-mənt/ or /pri-sen'ti-mənt/, in which the only part that sounds like N is in the second syllable, so the grid entry was PRES(N)TIMENT. Similarly, ESSEN is pronounced /es'ən/, not /es'en/, so the correct grid entry was (S)EN, not (S)(N).
