The 26 misprinted answers all began with different letters, to be replaced by (in clue order) “all the letters of the alphabet”, part of the Chambers definition of “pangram”. The initials of extra words in the other clues gave “code using misprints”, so their entries used the misprints as a substitution cipher, which also encodes PANGRAM as HEFBEET.
