Puzzle explanation

The corrections for misprints spelt out “Virgil’s Aeneid”. The quotation “timeo Danaos et dona ferentes” (I fear the Greeks even when they bring gifts) formed the outline of a horse’s head in the grid, within which the jumbled letters of GHOSTS were replaced by GREEKS.
