Correct letters for grid misprints gave Mairi’s Wedding, a Scottish folk song recorded by Kenneth McKellar, Moira Anderson and many others. Clue corrections spelt “Make eleven folds in grid; play squeeze-box”, so the grid was to be imagined as a concertina with a KEYBOARD at each end. Alternately opening and closing the bellows (going “out-in” style) would reveal the first two lines of the English version of the song:
Step we gaily on we go
Heel for heel and toe for toe
Arm and arm and row on row
All for Mairi’s wedding
The first 13 words appear in order, in alternate rows of the grid. The odd words are visible only when the concertina is stretched open (in alternate columns representing the pleats as seen from one side). The even words are formed only when the concertina is squeezed closed (ie, in the first and last pairs of columns).
