Misprint corrections spelt “cherchez la femme” (“there’s a woman at the bottom of it”). The woman in this case is the suffragette EMILY DAVISON (in the bottom row of the grid), who threw herself in front of the King’s horse, ANMER (in the top row), at Epsom on 4 June 1913. The suffragette slogans “Votes for women” and “Deeds, not words” formed an X (vote) in the grid. The letter W (for women) was omitted from the wordplay for any answers containing it.
