The extra letters from wordplay gave the instruction “shift first letters of the clues for more advice”. Cycling each clue’s initial letter 13 places in the alphabet provided the further instruction “shift a row by thirteen then highlight in purple”. When similarly cycled by 13 letters, the sixth row in the grid becomes “Caesar cipher”, a term for the type of encoding used. It is also called a Caesar shift, to which the title is a cryptic reference; purple is the colour of Roman emperors’ robes.
