Puzzle explanation
Letters added or omitted in the wordplay spelt “mélangez les présidents de la Cinquième République” which explained how to complete the unclued entries. These were the jumbled names of the six presidents of the French Fifth Republic since it was established in 1958: De Gaulle, Pompidou, Giscard D’Estaing, Mitterrand, Chirac and Sarkozy (excluding Alain Poher, who was acting-President on two short occasions). ELYSEE, the location of the presidential residence, was to be highlighted.
