Puzzle explanation

The puzzle marked the 45th anniversary of Decimal Day, 15 February 1971, when decimal currency was adopted in the UK and Ireland. Down entries to the left of the middle column had all instances of d (old penny) dropped; those to the right had p (new penny) dropped. The central column contained PENNY DROPPING with both P and D omitted, inside 1971.
