Detective Work by Ilver

Puzzle explanation

Three clues used references to other answers and also gave messages as follows:

  • 19ac: Some imperfect clue wordplays include extra letter
  • 18dn: First letters of every down imperfect clue tender instruction
  • 41ac: Sort first letters of other imperfect clues to produce theme
For 41ac, initials of the across clues with extra letters spelt “their poor clue”, an anagram of “Hercule Poirot”. For 18dn, the clues’ initials spelt “read the extra letters”; these spelt “unclued entry is an appropriate title”, leading to the Poirot short story The Double Clue.
