Puzzle explanation

The omitted letters spelt “I keep six honest serving-men / (They taught me all I knew)” from “The Elephant’s Child” (Just So Stories) by Rudyard Kipling. It continues: “Their names are What and Why and When / And How and Where and Who”. The six names were to be highlighted in the grid in a symmetrical arrangement, thus determining the isolated central letter as W.
